Negative thoughts or schemas

Through reality testing
What is the process of CBT?
The therapist helps hte client to identify negative thoughts and maybe keep a diary. The therapist challenges dysfunctional cognitions by drawing to positive incidents. Reality testing, like counting how many people smile at you if you believe no one likes you. This shows that negative thoughts are irrational and unrealistic and behavioural techniques are also used to encourage positve behaviour. Small goals are set to encourage a sense of personal effectiveness and achievement.

Irrational beliefs in response to an event
What does Ellis’s REBT therapy identify?
Irrational beliefs
How does REBT change irrational beliefs?
DIspute to change the effect, making the ABCDE model.
What types of dispute does REBT use?
Logical dispute to ask whether the thinking makes sense, empirical dispute to ask where the proof is that the beliefs are accurate and pragmatic dispute to asl how is this belief going to help me.
What are the strengths of REBT and CBT?
It is effective and there is lots of evidence like March et al used antidepressents and CBT and showed it was as effective as medicine.
What are the limitations of REBT and CBT?
It might not work for the most severe cases as they aren’t motivated at all. Also, CBT only treats certain aspects and a level of engagement is required. It also requires good patient-therapist relationships to have any effect.
