Therapist trains .. tc
thought catching, identifying and recording their automatic negative/ irrational thoughts. Once identified they are challenged and reconstructed.
the patients acts as a
scientist, hypothesis, testing irrational thoughts by carrying out homework tasks. such as testing new ways of thinking and behaving
the process of patients taking part in enjoyable activities is called
behavioral activation , this improves emotions and challenges thoughts.
Ellis’ CBT:
Rational Emotional Behaviour Therapy - REBT) The abc model developed
ABCDE:D
(Disputation of irrational beliefs) leading to E (effective change added)
The arguments can either be
logical (do the beliefs make sense?) or empirical ( is there any evidence for these beliefs
Postive evaluation:
March Et Al 2007, compared cbt medication and in combination with medication over 36 weeks for 327 people, finding both cbt alone and medication alone had the effectiveness of 81%, suggesting cbt as a effective medication
Negative evaluation:
cbt is not appropriate for people who are severely depressed as they may unwilling/ unable to engage in treatment. in these cases it may be more appropriate for them to take medication until they can engage in activities.
