Cognitive Approach to TREAT DEPRESSION Flashcards
What are the two parts of CBT?
Cognitive and behavioural elements
What is the cognitive part?
Involve identifiying faulty or irrational thinking processes affecting the cilent
Questions the cilent to give them examples of situations and what would they do
Develops about an idea on cilent’s irrational beliefes are but does not challenge these directly.
What is the behaviour part of the therapy?
Setting up homework for the cilents to do
Challenge their own irrational beliefs
Cilent identifies their own unhepful beliefs and proves them wrong
belief changes
Aim of CBT
- Challenge their own negative thoughts and replace with constructive postive thoughts leading to healthy behaviour
- People are often unaware that they are subjective to cognitive errors
- Therapist teaches cilents to identify disorderd congnitions through a process of evaulation
- Monitor their thoughts
- Challenge them
Explain aims of Elli’s rational emotive behaviour therapy REBT
D - Disrupting irrational thoughts and beliefs
E - Effects od disrupting and effective attitude to life
F - New Feelings and emotions that are produced
REBT?
CBT for depression
Explain some techniques for REBT
- Homework - asked to complete the assignment
- Behavioural activation: Focus on encouraging depressed clients to be more active
- Unconditioned positive regard - client feeling worthless - less willing to change , therapist provides respect regardless of client , facilitate change in beliefs and attitudes
Strength support
Ellis clamied 90% success rate for REBT , taking average 27 sessions to complete
CBT is effective treatment for depression
Links in with recommindation with paitents with depression to be the most appropriate treatment
Strength
Babyak 2000 found support for behavioural activation
Changing behaviour in some way to change depression
Conducted a prodcedure where adults had major depression disorder , randomly assigned for a month of exercise , drug treatment or both
Shown exercise group had lower relapse than men
Limitation
Not suitable for everyone
CBT appears to be less suitable with people for high irrational beliefs that are both rigid and resistant to change
Also not suitable for situations of high stress in individual reflect releastic stresses in person’s life that therapy cannot resolve
Limitation of CBT
Is drugs better?
Most popular treatment for depression is use of antidepresdants such as SSRIS
Less enagtive effort on cilent e.g 27 sessions
Used in conjunction with psychotherpay
May be useful because distressed cilent may be unable to focus on the demands on CBT
drug treatment is better
