Cognitive Approach - Thinking and Decision Making Flashcards
What is thinking
The process of using knowledge and information to make plans, interpret the world, and make predictions about the world in general.
What is decision making
The process of identifying and choosing alternatives based on the values and preferences of the decision-maker.
What is the Dual Process Model
Says that there are two basic models of thinking. System 1 and system 2
Models of Thinking
System 1: Automatic, intuitive way of thinking, employs heuristics. Allows for efficient processing but is prone to errors. Feelings of confidence
System 2: Slower, conscious way of thinking, requires more effort. Less likely to create feelings of confidence.
what is heuristics
mental shortcuts that involve focusing on one aspect of a complex problem and ignoring others.
Strengths of Dual Process Model
There is biological evidence that shows different types of thinking may be processed in different parts of the brain
Limitations of Dual process Model
- Does not clearly explain how these modes of thinking interact or how our thinking can be influenced by emotion
- Definitions of System 1 and system 2 are not always clear
