cognitive approach Flashcards
cognitive approach definition
The term ‘cognitive’ means mental processes. This approach is focused on how mental processes such as thoughts, perceptions, and attention impact behaviour.
cognitive approach basic assumptions
- the mind actively processes information from senses
-argues internal mental processes should be studies scientifically - mediational processes occur between stimulus and response
- Humans are information processors and therefore resemble computers.
internal mental processes
Private operations of the mind such as perception and attention that mediate between stimulus and response.
schema
A mental framework of beliefs and explanations that influence cognitive processing. They are developed from experience.
role of the schema
Schemas allow individuals to take shortcuts when interpreting large amounts of information. This prevents people from becoming overwhelmed by environmental stimuli. However, schemas can lead to perceptual errors and stereotypes. Individuals make assumptions about people based on incomplete information, because schema can distort interpretations of sensory information
Using Models to Understand Cognitive Processing
Theoretical models, such as the information processing approach, suggest that information flows through a sequence of stages that include input, storage, and retrieval. A good example is the multi-store model of memory
The Emergence of Cognitive Neuroscience
Cognitive neuroscience investigates how cognition is produced by the interaction of neural mechanisms, neurochemistry, and brain structure. This is essentially a fusion of the cognitive approach and biology – it is the scientific study of the influence of brain structures (neuro) on mental processes (cognition)
