Cognitive Approach Flashcards

1
Q

Assumption

A

The mind works like a compute in that it has input from the senses which is processed and then produces and output such as specific behaviour

Feature 1
STUDY OF INTERNAL MENTAL PROCESS

A

-internal mental process can be studied scientifically by investigating memory perception nd thinking
-are private nd cannot be observed so are studied indirectly by making inferences bout what’s going on inside the mind based on b

Q

What is meant by interference

A

Process where cognitive psychologists draw logical assumptions about how internal mental process drive our b
Based on observed behaviour but not directly inferred

Feature 2
THE USE OF THEORETICAL ND COMPUTER MODELS

A

Cognitive psychologists argue that the mind functions like a computer
-the info processing model applies idea of human mind functioning like a computer e.g info may enter the brain but how we respond depends on how we process the info
3 stage process
INPUT = receive info form envir via our sense e.g sight sound smell nd it’s encoded
INFO PROCESSING= the info is now processed
We store the info as memory
OUTPUT= appropriate behaviour emotion is performed
Or retrieval of info occurs

Q

Part of F2
Use of theoretical models to explain b

A

Models can be used to provide testable theories about mental processing nd these can be studied scientifically nd inferences made
-cognitive psychologists take b nd look at what happen “behind the scenes” then describe process in series of steps
-impo theoretical model is multi store model which sugg memory has separate unitary stories each with diff coding capacity nd durations info flows linear way

Feature 3
THE ROLE OF SCHEMAS

A

-schemas form of Internal mental process
-mental representations e.g Iwm
-change trough life’s nd become more detailed trough experience
ROLE OF SCHEMAS=help make quick decisions cox they are a useful metal shortcut that prevents us from being overwhelmed by info from the environment
WHY SCHEMAS MAY NOT BE BENEFICIAL
Cause biased recall EWT may recall what we expect to see than what we have actually witnessed

Q

AO3 strength

A

-practical application
-principle of theory b caused by internal mental process led to treatment CBT effective -treating disorders such as depressing individuals dispute their irrational toughts nd negative schemas
-impo part of applied psych help treat ppl in real world

Q

AO3 limitation

A

-machine reductionism
-breaks down complex human b of internal menayal process into simple basic units like mind operating like a machine
e.g computer input process and output
-machine reductionism ignores influence of holism nd human emotion e.g anxiety
-comparing mind to computer weakens
