Cognitive Approach Flashcards
What does cognitive psychology focus on?
How people perceive, store, manipulate and interpret informantion; studying processes like perception, memory thinking and problem solving.
Do cognitives believe we need to look at internal mental processes to understand behaviour?
Yes, unlike beaviourists
What is an information processing model?
Where information received through the senses is processed by various systems in the brain. Input, processing, output
How does the cognitive approach study mental processes?
They believe they cannot be studied directly, and are instead studies indirectly by inferring what goes on as a result of measuring behaviour.
What is a schema?
A cognitive framework which helps organise and interpret information in the bran.
What are examples of things we develop schemas for?
How to behave in different situations (football match vs classroom) or in different roles (eg guard in a moc prison.
Why are schemas useful?
They allow us to take shortcuts when interpreting the huge amount of information we have to on a daily basis- prevent cognitive overload
