cog neuro textbook Flashcards
reductionism
replacing mind-based concepts with neuroscientific concepts
the information processing approach of behaviour
describing behaviour in a series of cognitive stages
modularity
the idea that certain cognitive processes are restricted in the type of info they process
domain specificity
a cognitive process or region is dedicated solely to one particular type of information
single cell recordings
measure the responsiveness of a neuron to a given stimulus (in action potentials /per second)
electroencephalography (EEG)
measurements of electrical signals generated by the brain through an electrodes cap being placed on the scalp
event-related potential (ERP)
the average amount of change in voltage that is linked to the timing of particular cognitive events (actions / reactions / stimulus)
grandmother cell
a hypothetical neuron which responds to one particular stimulus (EX - grandmother)
3 types of neural representation
local representation - all the info about an event is in one single neuron
fully distributed representation - all the info about an event is in all the neurons of a specific population
sparse distributed representation - a small proportion of the neurons carry info about an event
