Q

Short term memory

A

Our memory for immediate events. Short term memories last for a very short time and disappear unless they are rehearsed. The STM has limited duration and capacity.

Q

Long term memory

A

Memory for the events that have happened in the past. This lasts anywhere from 2 minutes to 100 years. LTM has potentially unlimited duration and capacity.

Q

forgetting

A

The inability to recall or recognise something that has been previously learned. May be due to lack of availability (decay) or lack of accessibility (cue dependent forgetting)

6
Q

multi-store model

A

Explains memory in terms of three stores (sensory, STM & LTM). The transfer of data can be explained in terms of attention and rehearsal.

7
Q

reconstructive memory

A

Fragments of stored information are reassembled during recall and the gaps are filled in by our explanations as beliefs to produce a coherent narrative (e.g. Next 3 terms)

Q

confabulation

A

A memory based on fabricated, distorted or misinterpreted memory often believed t be true in spite pf contradictory evidence.
* E.g. Loftus and Palmer
○ Experiment 1: verb effect
○ Experiment 2: broken glass
distortion of memory

16
Q

episodic buffer

A

part of working memory which is a temporary store integrating information from the other components

17
Q

episodic memory

A

type of long-term memory for information about specific experiences and events in our lives

18
Q

inner scribe

A

stores information about the physical relationship of items (part of the visuo-spatial sketchpad)

19
Q

phonological loop

A

part of working memory that deals with auditory information

20
Q

primary acoustic store

A

part of the phonological loop which stores words heard

21
Q

procedural memory

A

LTM for “knowing how”

22
Q

retrieval

A

the recall of stored memories

23
Q

retroactive interference

A

occurs when newly learned information interferes with and impedes the recall of previously learned informations

24
Q

semantic memory

A

type of LTM for information about the world that is not linked to particular contexts or events

25
Q

sensory register

A

store of sensory information that lasts no more than a few seconds

26
Q

visuo-spatial sketch pad

A

part of working memory that deals with visual information
