cog and crim practical Flashcards
aim
to investigate the effect of reconstructive memory and memory decay on an EW recall when ppts had a time delay in between reporting an incident
IV
amount of time between witnessing the stabbing incident on a video and recall
ca: immediate recall after seeing the video of stabbing
cb: recall after time delay 7 days
DV
memory recall of stabbing immediately and after the week time delay- amount of correctly answered q on a cued recall (fixed responses) memory test based around the event of 10 q
and free recall
alternate hypothesis
there will be a significant difference in the amount of of correctly answered q (out of 10) in a cued recall about a video of a stabbing incident when recall is immediate compared to recall a week later
null hypothesis
there will be no significant difference in the amount of correctly answered q out of 10 in a cued recall about a video of a stabbing incident when recall is immediately done compared to recall a week later using a fixed 10 q questionnaire on incident
what sampling technique was used
opportunity sampling- psych students available 17-18, 3m and 15f
strength of sampling technique
easy and convenient- class of psychology students who were available at the time to watch video and answer questionnaire on details of the video and crime
weakness of sampling technique
uses psych students aged 17-19
biased as teenagers have better memories than older people and used to being regularly tested so findings can be generalised to wider population
procedure
initially ppts informed they would be shown a video about an incident- instructed to watch video and complete questionnaire on the clip
all sat on a desk to themselves and watched w/o any distractions
video lasted 2.09 minutes from BBC documentry covering EWT
the instructed to complete questionnaire of 10 fixed q in silence and analysed through bar graph and wiloxon signed ranks
quantitative results
mean on 1st q= 8.28, 2nd = 7.94
range is 5
calculated value of 16.6 wasn’t smaller than 13 critical value so not sig so null hypothesis is accepted so mmeory doesn’t change over time
s of practical
high in validity - controls
high in reliability - standardised procedures
w of practical
low in generalisability- 18 psych students etc
low in eco validity - video not actual
1 improvements
sample size, more accurate crime scene eg robbery in refectory
