Coffee Flashcards
Where are coffee beans normally grown?
Hot, wet areas close to the equator such as Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia and Ethiopia
What issues are there in code production?
Coffee plants are susceptible to a range of diseases
Farmers have to look out for insects that may destroy the plant
Certain weather conditions can make outbreaks of disease and pests more likely
Farmers use fertilisers and pesticides often imported into the country making them expensive
How is coffee generally traded?
Produced by less developed countries and consumed by developed countries
What country is the largest producer in the world?
Brazil is the largest producer expiring 20% of the worlds coffee in 2015
What country is the largest importer of coffee?
The USA imported around 20% of the worlds coffee in 2015
How much do farmers get from supermarket sales of coffee?
Only around 7-10% due to the sale of unprocessed beans being very low value

TNCs as they buy the unprocessed beans and roast them which increases their value
Why do small scale farmers have less power?
