T-cell-mediated autoimmune disease (HLA DQ2) of small bowel
Reaction to gliadin (a prolamin (gluten protein) found in wheat)
Causing villous atrophy & malabsorption

Outline the typical presentation of coeliac disease
A
- Any age (peak - infancy and 50-60yrs)
- Stinking stools/ steatorrhoea
- Diarrhoea & weight loss
- Failure to thrive
- Bloating abdo pain
- Nausea & vomiting
- Aphthous ulcers

How do you diagnose coeliac disease?
A
- Antibody
- a-gliadin
- Transglutaminase
- Anti-endomysial (IgA antibodies)
- Endoscopy & duodenal biopsy
- Villous atrophy
- WBCs & crypt hyperplasia
- Reverses on gluten free diet
