What is coeliac disease?
A
IgA mediated condition where there is a hypersensitivity to gluten leading to villous atrophy and malabsorption

What are the symptoms?
A
Diarrhoea Abdominal pain-crampy FTT in children Nausea Prolonged fatigue Mouth ulcers Anaemia Dermatitis herpetiformis Rarely neurological symptoms

What investigations are needed?
A
Bloods
- FBC
- U&Es
- LFTs
- B12
- Folate
- Iron
- Total IgA and anti TTG
- -do total IgA as if low then it can cause false negatives
Endoscopy with biopsy is gold standard
- crypt hypertrophy
- villous atrophy

What is the management?
A
Lifelong gluten free diet
- avoid grains
- no bread/wraps/beer/pasta/rye/oats
