A

IgA mediated condition where there is a hypersensitivity to gluten leading to villous atrophy and malabsorption

What are the symptoms?

A
Diarrhoea
Abdominal pain-crampy
FTT in children
Nausea 
Prolonged fatigue
Mouth ulcers
Anaemia
Dermatitis herpetiformis
Rarely neurological symptoms

What investigations are needed?

A

Bloods

  • FBC
  • U&Es
  • LFTs
  • B12
  • Folate
  • Iron
  • Total IgA and anti TTG
  • -do total IgA as if low then it can cause false negatives

Endoscopy with biopsy is gold standard

  • crypt hypertrophy
  • villous atrophy

What is the management?

A

Lifelong gluten free diet

  • avoid grains
  • no bread/wraps/beer/pasta/rye/oats
