Q

why is the reliability of coding less straightforward?

A
  1. correlation establishes co-variance not exact agreement as two sets of ratings that are identical may mean different things
  2. overlap between coders - conseq of coders choosing coding categ freq e.g. perfect agreement not always impressive
  3. use reliability formula

Q

further considerations for good coding schedule?

A
  1. best to have too many categories than too few, as computer can amalgamate theories
  2. essential to have ‘other’ category for all questions to identify any pattern or theme (but can get too big)
  3. avoid multi-coding as it adds complexity to statistical analysis
  4. coding categories should be conceptually coherent, as x want to use bad example to code
  5. trial and error when developing coding schedule
