coding in STM. Series of letters shown to participants and had to write in same order. More mistakes made when letters sounded same. Shows acoustic coding.
Jacobs
digit span technique to measure capacity of STM. Read out list of numbers to repeat. Number added each time had to be read out in same order. Capacity of 5-9.
Miller
‘chunking’. length of words does not matter. Only takes up one of 5-9 units of STM.
Peterson + Peterson
Duration of STM. participants given consonant syllable and 3 digit number. Had to count back from number to prevent mental rehearsal of syllable. Told to stop at different time. Duration is 18 seconds.
Baddeley
Coding of LTM. participants in 4 groups. Recall the same for acoustically similar + dissimilar words after 20 mins. Semantically similar words recalled worse. LTM coded semantically.
Bahrick et al
Duration of LTM. 2 groups all went to same high school within 50 years. Recall groups asked to recall names after shown a photo. Other group had to name each person in a yearbook from a list of names. Recognition group identified more. LTM duration better with recognition not recall. 50 years- life.
