Coding, capacity and duration Flashcards
What is Memory?
Memory is the structure and processes involved in the encoding, storage and retrieval of information.
What are the 3 components of memory?
- Sensory register
- Short term memory
- Long term memory
How are the 3 components of memory studied?
- Coding - The way in which information is changed and stored in memory.
- Capacity - The amount of information that can be stored.
- Duration - The length of time that information is held in a memory store.
What is the Sensory Register?
Sensory register is an automatic response to the reception of sensory information by the sense organs. It is modality specific meaning that raw and unprocessed information from all five senses is processed and temporarily stored in separate stores.
What is the Coding of the Sensory Register?
Different stores of the sensory register:
1) Echoic - Auditory information
2) Iconic - Visual information
3) Haptic - Tactile information
4) Gustatory - Taste information
5) Factory - Smell information
What is the Capacity of the Sensory Register?
Unknown but definitely large.
What is the Duration of the Sensory Register?
- Approx 250 ms
- Very limited
- Pay attention information is transferred into the STM
- Do not pay attention information fades quickly
Who studied the Coding of the STM?
Baddeley
What is the Coding of the STM?
Mainly acoustic
Who studied the Capacity of the STM?
Jacobs
What is the Capacity of the STM?
7+/-2 chunks of information
Who studied the Duration of the STM?
Peterson and Peterson
What is the Duration of the STM?
18-30 seconds
Who studied the Coding of the LTM?
Baddeley
What is the Coding of the LTM?
Mainly semantic
What is the Capacity of the LTM?
- No study conducted to test this
- Unlimited
Who studied the Duration of the LTM?
Bahrick
What is the Duration of the LTM?
