Coding, capacity and duration Flashcards
What is Memory?
The structure and processes involved in the storage and retrieval of information.
What are the 3 components of memory?
- Sensory register
- Short term memory
- Long term memory
How are the 3 components of memory studied?
- Coding - the way in which information is changed and stored in memory.
- Capacity - the amount of information that can be stored.
- Duration - the length of time that info is held in that memory store.
What is the Sensory Register?
An automatic response to the reception of sensory information by the sense organs.
What is the coding of the sensory register?
Different stores of the sensory register:
1) Echoic - auditory info
2) Iconic - visual info
3) Haptic - tactile info
4) Gustatory - taste info
5) Factory - smell info
What is Modality Specific?
Raw/unprocessed information from all 5 senses.
What is the Capacity of the Sensory Register?
Unknown but definitely large.
What is the Duration of the Sensory Register?
- Approx 250 ms
- Very limited
- Pay attention info is transferred into the STM
- Do not pay attention info fades quickly
Who studied coding of STM and LTM?
Baddeley (1966).
What is the coding of the STM?
Mainly acoustically
Who studied capacity of STM?
Jacobs (1887).
What is the capacity of STM?
7+/-2 chunks of information.
Who studied duration of STM?
Peterson and Peterson (1959).
What is the duration of STM?
18-30 seconds.
What is the coding of the LTM?
Mainly semantically.
