MEP Contraindications
What type of pain is codeine used for?
Mild to moderate pain
Codeine should only be used to relieve acute moderate pain in children older than……
12 years and only if it cannot be relieved by other painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen alone
Maximum daily dose in children aged 12-18yrs
240 mg/ day. QDS with intervals of no less than 6 hours

Which age group and category is codeine contraindicated?
Codeine is contraindicated in all children under 18yrs who undergo the removal of tonsils or adenoids for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea.
Codeine is contraindicated in patients of any age who are…… and mothers who are……..?
Ultra-rapid metabolisers of codeine (CYP2D6 ultra-rapid metabolisers) and breastfeeding mothers because it can pass tot he baby through breast milk.
Signs of morphine toxicity:
- pinpoint pupils
- unconsciousness
- respiratory depression.
- nausea and vomiting
- lack of appetite
- drowsiness (somnolence)
What do in morphine toxicity?
Stop treatment and seek medical attention
MHRA/CHM advice (April 2015) Codeine for cough and cold: restricted use in children. Consider that codeine is CI in:
- children under 12yrs old
- CYP2D6 ultra-rapid metabolisers
- breast-feeding mothers

What should you dispense/supply when Diabetic Codeine Linctus is prescribed?

Can dihydrocodeine be used in breastfeeding mothers?
Use only if benefit outweighs risk
Dihydrocodeine MHRA/ CHM advice:
Prescribe and dispense by strength to minimise dispensing errors and risk of accidental opioid overdose.
