Cockroach Startle Flashcards
Nervous system
brain- thoracic ganglion- connective nerves- abdominal ganglion- segmental nerves
brain not necessarily
involved in startle behaviour
Can start running from
air produced from movement of tongue before it leaves mouth
sense organs
cercus- 20 segments
bears various sensilla including filliform
filiform- 14 per segment (small hairs) sensitive to sudden air movements
each filiform most sensitive to air from a particular direction
From air to running
Cercal filiform sensila send axons to last abdominal ganglia
synapse with particulat GIs
GIs axons carry signal to thoracic ganglia
G1
attack from same side as axon
G2
rear
G3
front
Why do different GIs respond to threats from different directions?
because they synapse with different filiform sensila
extra spikes increase
the angle of turn of escape
How many degrees turn does 1 spike cause?
7.4 degrees
