Cochlear Implants Flashcards
Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet
He recruited Deaf Frenchman Laurent Clerc to help establish the Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons, which opened in Hartford on April 15, 1817. Alice Cogswell was its first registered student. Now called the American School for the Deaf, this historic institution will celebrate its bicentennial in 2017. This was essentially the first form of a school for the deaf, making learning more accessible.
Cochlear Implant
A cochlear implant is a wire inserted into the cochlea which sends electrical signals to the brain to interpret speech. It does not give a complete tonal range, but helps the patient understand speech.
Marlee Matlin
Advocate for deaf people opposing cochlear implants as not a one size fits all solution and criticizes people for seeing deafness as a black and white issue.
CRISPIR and Deafness
CRISPIR ties into deafness because one day deafness can simply be edited out of someone or a baby. This, like the article I am references would likely lead to the end of deaf culture unlike people with CLS can adopt sign language on their own.
