Coasts case study 1 (humans at the coast) Flashcards
where is Sundarbans?
SW Bangladesh and E India
Delta of Ganges,
Brahmaputra
Meghna rivers on Bay on Bengal
what are large parts of region protected by?
national parks part of largest mangrove forest in world
what is land like in Sundarbans?
flat and low-lying, intersected by thousands of channels many containing small sandy/ silty islands
what is natural coastal state of Sundarbans?
- dynamic equilibrium
- material is deposited allowing growth of mangroves,
- eroded by sea so size of sediment store remains same
what are the 4 main economic opportunities in Sundarbans?
- home to natural products sold= £
- flat/ low-lying land= fertile= ideal for growing crops
- rich ecosystem of mangroves= food = sales
- mangroves= timbre for reconstructing
what are the 2 service opportunities?
- mangroves = defence against flooding
- mangroves against coastal erosion- roots bind soil together
what are the 3 development opportunities?
- toursim and wildlife visitors
- cargo ships transport good and food inland
- power plant = energy for people
what are 4 occupational risks of living in Sundarbans?
- lack of fresh water because the fresh water is diverted upstream for agricultural use
- low lying land= rising sea level risk=flooding= salination= hard grow crops
- growing pop= more fuel needed & agri land= cut down mangroves= ^flooding risk
- poor region only have 1/5th electricity, lack of comms e.g. no flood warning
what 3 mitigation techniques do they use at Sundanbans?
- 3500km of embankments= prevent flooding yet being eroded
- replant mangroves that were removed hard to stop illegal forest clearnance
- mitigate extreme events e.g. cyclones, cyclone shelters, warning system, transport???
what 4 adaption techniques do they use at Sundanbans?
- salt resistant rice
- increase tourism (boat trips on river)
- houses on stilts
- sustainability, non intensive farming practises
what are the 3 resilience techniques used?
- PHED inreasing access to clean water
- roads/ bridges built improving access. DEFORESTATION!!
- NGO’s provide training in sustainable fishing/ farming methods
