Coasts Flashcards
What is Fetch
The distance over which the wind belows across the sea
What is Swash
The movement of water up the beach after a wave breaks,It carries sediment and deposition material
What is backwash
The water that flows back down the beach towards the sea, often pulling sediment with it
Wave types
Destructive - erosion
Constructive - deposition
Coastal erosion processes
Hydraulic Action
Compressed Air
Abrasion
Attrition
Solution
Coastal Feature
Erosion - Sea cliff,arch,stack,stump,blowhole,wave-cut platform
Deposition - Beach,sand spit,sand bar,tombolo,lagoon
Longsore Drift
Longshore Drift is the movement of sediment along the shore, caused by waves hitting the beach at an angle. As waves break, they push sediment up the beach(swash) and the water than flows back down, carrying sediment with it(backwash) in a zigzag pattern.
Coastal Deposition
Coastal Deposition happens when waves lose energy and rip the sediment they carry, forming features like beaches, spits, and sandbars in sheltered areas where the water is calmer.
