coasts Flashcards
What is atrition
when material such as rocks and stones carried by waves hit and knock against each other making them smaller and smaller
what is abrasion
when rocks and other materials carried by the sea are picked up by strong waves and thrown against the coastline causing more material to be broken off and carried away by the sea
what is fetch
the distance the wave travels (the bigger the distance the bigger the wave )
what is erosion
where the action of the sea wears away and creates landform
what is transportation
the action of the waves moves sedimet ( sand and rocks ) along the coastline
what is deposition
is where the sediment gets deposed most comon on beaches
what are the 9 different uses of a coast
dregging
farming
fishing
ports
wind power
settelments
leisure
industry
defence
what is wind duration
how long the wind is blowing for
what is wind strength
how strong is the wind blowing
what is a headland
a headland is a clif that sticks out to the sea they are made of hard rock so they are more resistant to abrasion and is surrounded by water in the 3 sides
what is a bay
a bay is a crescent-shaped indentation in the coastline found between two headlands it usally has a beach wich is composed of sand or shingle
what are prevailing winds
winds that come from a certain direction which is the most common
where does longshore drift go
longshore drift goes in one direction
Label the wave
crest , wave length , wave hight , throught , still water level
concordant coastline
is the band of one rock type that runs parralel to the coastline
