Coasts Flashcards
what is the littoral zone?
wider coastal zone including adjacent land areas and shallow parts of the sea just offshore
- exposed to the air at low tide and underwater at high tide
what do we say they are in when the inputs and outputs are balanced and equal?
they are in dynamic equilibrium
what are the four inputs?
marine (waves, tides, storm surges)
atmospheric (weather/climate)
land (rock type and structure, tectonic activity)
people (human activity, coastal management)
what are the processes in a coast?
weathering
mass movement (movement of surface material)
erosion
transport (movement off sediment)
deposition (dropping off sediment)
what are the outputs?
- erosional landforms (stack, arch)
- depositional landforms (spits)
- different type of coasts (sandy beach, coral reef, wetlands, rocky shores)
what is a sediment supply? and an example?
- weathering and erosion produce outputs (sediment), this is then transported and deposited to produce coastal landforms
eg the wash & north norfolk beaches
what are the four things used to classify a coast?
- geology (concordant/discordant)
- energy (high or low)
- balance (between erosion and deposition)
- sea level (create sub or emergent)
