Coasts Flashcards
What is a Headland?
The protruding edge of a cliff made of resistant rock
How are Headlands made?
As the waves hit the cliff (hydraulic action) they wear away the rock. The resistant rock takes longer times to wear away, creating protruding headlands.
What is a Bay?
It’s is an inlet of soft clay or rock on a cliff
How are bays formed?
The waves wear away the cliff and the softer clay and rock erode faster causing bays to be formed
What is a Constructive wave?
This is a wave with a stronger swash than back wash that form depositional features
What is a destructive wave?
A wave with a stronger backwash than wash, that forms erosional features.
Swash?
Wave that comes onto the shore
Backwash?
Wave that goes into the sea
How are Cliffs formed?
The high tide hits the rock, with the most pressure at the bottom causing a notch to form. As the notch grows bigger, the rock above it collapses and is washed away by the sea
