Coasts Flashcards
What are destructive waves
They tend to erode the coast
what are constructive waves
they break on the shore and deposit material, building up beaches
Characteristics of destructive waves
.Taller than constructive waves
.Stronger backwash than constructive waves
Characteristics of Constructive waves
.Longer than destructive waves
.Stronger swash than destructive waves
What is longshore drift
movement of pebbles along the beach, along the waves. pebbles collide with other pebbles and erode making beach smaller
What are sea walls
verticle concrete barriers. reflect wave energy back out the sea. protect cliff from erosion.
What are rip rap
boulder of hard rocks in front of sea wall. it dissipates the wave energy. protects inland areas from erosion
What are groynes
wooden barriers built across beach. trap sand and make beach wider. protects inland areas from flooding and erosion
what is hard engineering
people build in between coast and land.
