Q

Describe Marsh succession in 4 steps

A

(1)Tidal conditions bring seawater and sediments in and out, and rivers bring fine muds and silts and deposit them at the sides of the estuary.

(2) The tiny clay particles stick to one another, in a process known as flocculation, and once deposited they are colonised by algae.

(3) The pioneer plants formed have to survive being covered with slightly salty (brackish) water twice a day.

(4) Over time, the plants change the conditions by trapping more sediment, which builds the salt marsh up to a higher level, so that other plants can colonise due to less saltwater exposure.

Q

Explain sand dune succession in 5 steps

A

(1) Barrier to seawater e.g log allows formation of embryo dune, which slowly grows and is colonised by plants such as sea couch grass

(2) Conditions slowly become more tolerable through progressive colonisation, and fore dune forms

(3) After rapid growth thanks to marram grass colonisation, yellow dune forms

(4) After successive plant deaths, they add humus to sand and form soil, developing a grey dune

(5) After more nutrients attained and moisture retention improved, climax community is achieved and pine trees ( example ) grow there
