Coastal Processes Flashcards

1
Q

What does sub-aerial mean?

A

Land based processes that change the shape of a coastline. A combination of weathering and mass movement.

Q

What is mechanical weathering?

A

The physical break up of rock. One example is freeze thaw.

Q

What is freeze thaw?

A

When water gets into cracks and joints in the rock, when it freezes it expands and cracks the rock open a little wider. Overtime the pieces of rock split off the rock face

Q

What is chemical weathering?

A

Chemical weathering occurs when rocks are broken down by chemical processes.

Q

What is the process of chemical weathering?

A

When rainwater is slightly acidic through absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
This reacts with minerals in the rock, creating new material.
Rock type affects the rate of weathering.

Q

What is biological weathering?

A

When rocks are worn away by living organisms.

7
Q

What is the process of biological weathering?

A

Trees and other plants can grow within the cracks in a rock formation.
As the roots grow bigger, they push open cracks in the rocks.
Over time the growing tree eventually forces the rock apart.

Q

What is mass movement?

A

The downhill movement of material under the influence of gravity.

11
Q

What causes an increase in the likelihood of mass movement?

A

Throughflow and runoff caused by heavy rain reduce the stability of cliffs.

Q

What is a slump?

A

A slump is formed when a large area of land moves down a slope in one piece due to the rock becoming too saturated and heavy

16
Q

What is a spit?

A

An extended stretch of sand or shingle that extends out to the sea from the shore.

17
Q

How does a spit form

A

Due to longshore drift, sediment is transported along a beach until the coastline changes direction. When the coastline direction changes, shallow areas allow for deposition of sediment

18
Q

When does a bar form?

A

When a spit grows across a bay.

19
Q

When does a lagoon form

A

When a bar is formed, a small body of water is cut off from the sea. That body of water is a lagoon.

20
Q

What impacts does a fall in sea level have on a coastal area?

A

Old shoreline stranded above sea level.
Creates new land.
