Coastal Managment Methods Flashcards
Rip rap
Large boulders which absorb wave energy hard engineering which holds the line
Curved sea wall
A solid concrete wall that is curved. Strong and long-lasting. The curved structure reflects wave energy away from the coast.hard engineering which holds the line
Groyne
Barriers made of wood/concrete/ rock that stick out into the sea.Prevents long shore drift from occurring, building up the beach in order to absorb wave energy at the beach.Hard engineering which advances the line
Beach nourishment
Putting additional sand onto the beach. Creates a larger beach which absorbs the wave energy.Soft engineering which advances the line
Managed retreat
Allowing a designated area of land to flood. Channels the sea water into an area of lower value, therefore reducing the erosive power acting upon more valuable areas.soft engineering which retreats
Hard engineering
Built structures which help protect the coast from erosion.
Soft Engineering
Adapting the natural processes in the area in a way which may help protect the coast
What is Hold the line?
Aiming to maintain the position of shoreline as it is.
What is advance the line?
Aiming to move the position of the shoreline further out into the sea
What is Retreat?
Aiming to move the position of shoreline further inland
