Coastal Management Flashcards
What is the aim of coastal management?
The aim of coastal management is to protect homes, businesses and the environment from erosion and flooding.
What is hold the line?
It is maintaining the existing coastal defences.
What is advance the line?
Build new coastal defences further out to sea than the existing line of defence.
What is managed realignment?
Allow the shoreline to move but manage retreat so it causes less damage (e.g. flooding farmland rather than towns).
What does hard engineering involve?
Hard engineering defences involves built structures.
What does soft engineering involve?
Soft engineering defences involve coaxing a natural process along.
Name 5 examples of hard engineering defences?
Sea Wall, Revetment, Gabions, Riprap, Groynes
Name 5 examples of soft engineering defences?
Beach nourishment, beach stabilisation, dune regeneration, land use management and coastal realignment.
What is the Shoreline Management Plan?
For each sediment cell, a plan is devised on how best to manage it. Authorities can decide to hold, advance or retreat the line or do nothing.
What is the Integrated Coastal Zone Management?
It considers all elements of the coastal system when coming up with a management strategy. It aims to protect the coastal zone in a relatively natural state, whilst allowing people to use it and develop it in different ways.
Are soft engineering techniques more sustainable?
Yes because it has a lower environmental impact and economic cost.
