Coastal Management Flashcards
What is rock armour?
Boulders that are piled up along the coast.
What is a groyne?
Fences that are built at right angles to the coast, trapping material transported by longshore drift.
What is beach nourishment?
Sand and shingle from elsewhere that’s added to beaches.
What is dune regeneration?
Creating or restoring sand dunes.
What is managed retreat?
Removing an existing defence and allowing the land behind it to flood.
Benefits of a sea wall?
It prevents erosion of the coast and acts as a barrier to prevent flooding.
Disadvantages of a sea wall?
It creates a strong backwash which erodes under the wall and is expensive to build and maintain.
Benefits of rock armour?
The boulders absorb wave energy, reducing erosion and flooding.
Disadvantages of rock armour?
Boulders need to be replaced often as they can be moved around by strong winds.
Advantages of groynes?
They create wider beaches which slow the waves, providing protection from erosion and flooding.
Disadvantages of groynes?
They starve beaches further down the coast of sand, making them narrower leading to greater erosion and flooding.
What is hard engineering?
Man-made structures built to control the flow of the sea and reduce erosion and flooding.
What is soft engineering?
Natural schemes set up using knowledge I’d the sea and its processes to reduce the effects of flooding and erosion.
What is a sea wall?
A wall made out of hard material that reflects waves back to sea.
