Coastal Landscapes Flashcards
How are bays formed?
In places where rock is soft and hard in different places, bays are often formed.
This is because the softer rock is worn away to form a bay and the harder rock juts out, forming a headland.
How are caves formed?
Caves are formed by two ways:
- AN EXISTING CRACK IN THE ROCK, which gets bigger and bigger
- A WEAK SPOT IN THE HEADLAND, such as soft rock, which gets eroded away.
What is a Tombolo?
A bar of sand joining an island to the mainland.
What is a Spit?
A narrow coastal landform that is tethered to the land by one end.
How are Spits formed?
By the longshore movement of sediment.
What is Longshore Drift?
Longshore drift is when materials are moved along the coastline.
What is Swash and Backwash?
SWASH - carries sediment up the beach.
BACKWASH - carries sediment down the beach, back out to sea.
How are coastal landscapes/forms formed?
By erosion, desposition and weathering
