coastal environment Flashcards
coastal environment
The result of interactions between the land (lithosphere), water (hydrosphere), air (atmosphere) and living things (biosphere)
sea vs ocean
seas are smaller than oceans and are usually located where the land and ocean meet. Typically, seas are partially enclosed by land
Coast
(impt ecosystem → home to many unique species)
- The area where the land meets the sea
- It covers the area of land that is affected by waves and tides and can be divided into zones
- It includes the beach and the cliff behind the beach
Coastline
- Marks the seaward limit of the land which is permanently exposed
- It is the highest point reached by storm waves
Shoreline
The line demarcating the sea and the shore
Position fluctuates with the tide
Shore
- The area of land which lies between the highest tide level and the lowest tide level
- Covered by sea at the high tide but exposed at low tide
Backshore
the area beyond the mean high water landwards, can be reached by high storm waves
Foreshore
area between high water level and low water level, covered in water during high tide
Nearshore
where waves steepen and break, most sediments transported in this zone
Offshore
lies off the foreshore, under water even when the tide is low
Beach
a beach is a low sloping interface between land and a body of water. It is often characterized by loose material at the interface, most often sand or very small rocks.
