What’s an Academy?
Funded by the government and ran by an academy trust.
What does becoming an academy enable the school to do?
Have more control over how they do things
Who set up free schools
Parents, charities, teachers & the community after parents have asked for it.
What do free schools allow
Have greater control over teacher’s pay, the curriculum and generally the schools finances.
What does the free schools programme aim to do?
Give parents more choices and increase competition between schools therefore improve quality of education
Main criticisms of Academies and Free Schools
They increase fragmentation and increase centralisation of control
What’s increasing fragmentation?
The comprehensive system is being replaced by diverse provision which means greater inequality in opportunities
