coagulation and flocculation Flashcards
1
Q
what is coagulation
A
the removal of suspended solids that are too light for gravity to act on them, “destabilization of colloids”
2
Q
why can separation of colloids be difficult?
A
they need to get to a large enough size in order for them to be removed
3
Q
what are hydrophobic colloids?
A
“water detesting” - they will eventually aggregate, although very slowly
4
Q
what are hydrophilic colloids?
A
“water loving” - they will react spontaneously to form colloids in water
5
Q
what are the 3 origins of primary charge
A
lattice imperfections, absorption of potential determining ions, ionogenic groups at surface
