Define Motivation Interviewing (MI)
A collaborative, person-centred form of guiding to elicit and strengthen motivation to change
What does the ‘Spirit of MI’ involve?
Compassion:The healthcare practitioner acts from a desire to support the patient’s wellbeing
Acceptance:The healthcare practitioner takes a respectful, non-judgemental approach, and values and affirms the patient’s autonomy and worth
Partnership:The healthcare practitioner works in partnership with the patient, recognising that the patient is resourceful and an ‘expert’ in their own situation
Evocation: The healthcare practitioner helps a patient to identify their own perspectives and motivation for change
What are the ‘Four Processes’ of MI?
Engaging:building connection and rapportwith patients
Focusing: helping patients to identify a healthbehaviour-relatedgoalthat they can then focus on during the coaching interaction
Evoking:supporting patients to explore their situationfurtherand evoketheir thoughts and feelings about their goal-includingthe reasons theirgoalisimportant to them and what barriers arein their way.This exploration may lead to new insights and you can helpbuild motivation by reinforcinganypositive and hopeful language thatpatientsuse when talking about their situation and goal (MI practitioners refer to thispositive languageas‘change talk’)
