Q

What’s the difference between a ‘trait’ theory of personality and a ‘type’ theory of personality?

A

In a trait theory a person falls on a spectrum of a particular trait. The categories are continuous.

In a type theory, a person is either in one category or another. The categories are discrete / discontinuous.

A person can’t be a bit of one and a bit of another.

Q

What is meant by ‘balance’ in the Co-active model?

A

Balance is the moving target of things being ‘in the right place’ in all areas of a coachee’s life. Their professional, romantic, family, health and diet etc. Often one of these will be ‘just right’ and the others will be out of balance

The coach’s job is to help the coachee move toward global balance. Making time for X, by dropping Y and understanding why that’s the right choice.

37
Q

What does it mean to focus on the ‘whole person’?

A

It means that they are not just a problem to solve or a goal to reach. That their issues are all entwined together and so you need to observe every part of them so that we get the whole story. Being understood like this can often resolve issues without taking a particular ‘action’.
