Co-ordintaed Body Systems Flashcards
Define Metabolism
all chemical processes involved in maintaining the living state of organisms and cells.
Define Anabolic reaction
reactions that build up complex molecules
Provide an example of an anabolic reaction
organisms growing
Define catabolic reaction
reactions that break down organic matter
Provide an example of an catabolic reaction
amylase breaking down food
Define enzyme
specialized cells that can speed up a reaction without being used up in the process
Why are enzymes important
Enzymes are important because without them reactions would occur to slowly to maintain life
Explain the lock and key model
only a specific key fits in a certain lock, the same goes for a substrate (complex molecule e.g. fat) and an enzyme.
Define diffusion
movement of a substance from a high concentration to a low concentration
How does diffusion apply in the small intestine
glucose diffuses through the chyme (acid passed from stomach to small intestine, mainly contains partyly digested food) through the wall of the small intestine into the blood.
How does diffusion apply in the alveoli (lungs)
allows gas diffusion to occur because of the large surface area
identify 4 ways the liver removes wastes from the body
- breaking down hormones
- breaking down hemoglobin
- breaks down/modifies toxic substances
- converts ammonia to urea
how are our body systems interdependent
each body system relies on others and cannot function without them
