Stimulus
Anything that we respond to in our environment.
Co-ordinator
Links up receptors and effectors and decides which response will take place if any.
Effector
Part of the body that produces a response e.g. muscle
Response
The action taken in response to a stimulus.
Behaviour
The overall total of our responses to the environment around us.
Central nervous system
The brain and spinal cord.
Neurone
A nerve cell.
Sense organ
Special organs where receptors can be grouped together.
Impulse
Information carried by a neurone as a small electrical charge.
Synapse
The junction between two neurones.
Reflex action
An automatic response that does not involve conscious thought.
Reflex arc
The pathway of an impulse taken through the spinal cord in a relex action.
Accommodation
Focusing of light rays on the retina.
Hormone
A chemical message.
Gland
Produces hormones.
Target organ
The organ that a hormone effects.
Homeostasis
Maintenance of constant state in the body.
Insulin
Hormone that prevents blood glucose becoming too high.
Negative feedback
Mechanism that ensures the level of something does not deviate too far from normal value.
Diabetes
A condition where the body does not produce enough insulin.
Osmoregulation
A homeostatic process that controls the amount of water in the blood and other body fluids.
Phototropism
The response of a plant to light.
Auxin
Hormone that controls phototropism.
Cell elongation
Cells becoming longer.
