CNS Pt. 1 Flashcards
3 Types of functional areas
Motor- voluntary movement
Sensory- awareness of sensation
Association- integrate diverse information
Motor areas
Primary somatic motor cortex.
Premotor cortex.
Broca’s area
Frontal eye field.
Motor homunculus
spatial representation
cross section of cerebral cortex
Wernicke’s area
Permits recognition of spoken & written language & creates plan of speech
Broca’s area
Generatws motor signals for larynx, tongue, cheeks, lips; speech function
Sensory Homunculus
Cortex area dedicated to sensations of body parts proportional to sensitivity of that body part
Special Senses
Taste - lower end of pc gyrus Hearing - superior temporal lobe Equillibrium - cerebellum Vision - occipital lobe Smell - medial temporal lobe & inferior frontal lobe
Cerebral White Matter
Myelinated fibers and their tracts
CWM is responsible for
communication
Commisures in corpus callosum
connect gray matter of two hemispheres
Association fibers
connect different part of same hemispheres
Projection fibers [corona radiata]
connect hemispheres with lower brain/ spinal cord
- thoughts of cortex to spinal
