CNS- Hierarchy of CNS Organization Flashcards
What are the functions of the cerebral cortex?
sensory perception, motor control, language, cognitive functions
What are the functions of the basal ganglia
initiation of movement and inhibition of antagonistic muscles
not needed just ex. hamstring to the quadricep
what is the function of the thalamus?
selects and relays sensory signals to the cortex
what are the functions of the hypothalamus?
maintaining homeostasis and emotions–> like fright, flight or fight
what are the functions of the cerebellum?
balance and voluntary movement, like eye, coordination, learning
what are the functions of the brainstem
controls the cardiovascular, digestive and respiratory systems. sleep/wake cycle, arousal, balance and posture and initiates the locomotor system
what is the function of the spinal cord
locomotor pattern generator
