CNS Flashcards
What are the two main parts of the CNS and whats their role?
1) Brain responsible of cognitive functions
2) spinal cord for delivering info from sensory organs to higher brain and from brain to effectors
what are examples of cognitive functions?
evaluation of sensory
stimuli, motor movements, memory
functions, thinking, speaking, emotions
and executive functions.
How can doctors gain info about brains activity and functions?
Autopsy (disection)
Electrical stimulation of the brain during
surgery
Investigation of patients with brain damage
Animal studies
Electrophysiology (EEG)
Imaging techniques
What are the three main functional parts of the brain?
1) Cerebral Cortex
2) Cerebellum
3) Brain Stem
What are examples of brain imaging?
(CT, MRI, fMRI, MRS,
PET
Whats the function of cerebral cortex?
the site where complex behaviours occur
whats the structural features of cerebral cortex?
its grey but connected to rest of the brain by white matter
whats the gyri and sulci of the brain?
folds and depressions in cerebral cortex that make brain wrinkled and increase cortical area
what are the 4 lobes the cortex are divided to?
Frontal Cortex
Parietal cortex
Temporal Cortex
Occipital Cortex
whats the function of frontal cortex?
carries out mental actions like thinking, planning and deciding
whats the function of parietal lobe?
processes sensory info about taste pain and touch and temp
what is a saggital plane?
its an anatomical plane that seperates the left and right side of brain
what is the limbic system made of?
1) Hypothalamus(homeostasis)
2) Amygdala (emotions)
3) Hippocampus(memory)
Where is the limbic system found?
in temporal lobe
functions of thalamus
sensory and motor integration
Explain function of basal ganglia
responsible for learning skills
it recieves messages from all parts of cerebral cortex but only sends to frontal lobe thru thalamus
what are glial cells
they support the neurons of CNS
axon vs dendrites
axon is away and long
dendrites toward and short
what is neuroplasticity
changes of synapses as brain develops
The neurotransmitter that stimulates the CNS
glutamate
the neurotransmitter that inhibits the CNS
GABA
the neurotrasmitter involved in muscle action, learning and memory
Acetylcholine
the neurotransmitter that is involved in control of hunger sleep and arousal
serotonin
the neurotransmitter that is involved in alertness and arousal
Norepinephrine
