Cnidaria Flashcards
What species make up Cnidaria?
Jellyfish, hydra, coral, anemone
What are Cnidaria like?
Marine, aquatic, carnivores, dimorphic body plan
What is the structure of a polyp?
Gastrovascular cavity surrounded by mesoglea (jelly filling) then surrounded by epidermis, hollow tentacles. Pedal base (?)
What is the structure of a medusa?
Gastrovascular cavity surrounded by mesoglea then surrounded by epidermis, tentacles facing downwards (hollow)
What is a cnidocyte?
Barb. Contain organelle called Cnida or cnidocyst.
What is hydrozoa?
Can have both forms but mainly polyp. Diverse with regards to shape, colonial, could look like a plant or polyp. Ex for mimicking polyp or jellyfish.
What is Scyphozoa
Both forms but mainly medusa. True jellyfish.
Anthrozoa
Flower animals. Corals and sea anemone, polyp only, marine only, tropical, shallow H2O, hard Calcium carbonate case, some have mutualistic relationship with algae.
Describe the colonial Obelia
Hydrozoa, Hydranth for reproduction, perisarc is outside while coenosarc is inside, goangium for …,
How many germ layers do cnidarians have, name these germ layers and the adult derivatives
They have three germ layers, the exoderm (epidermis), the endoderm (gastrovascular cavity), separated my the filler mesoglea
What are the two cnidarian body plans?
Medusa and polyp
What features do Cnidarians have
tentacle, mouth, epidermis, mesoglea, gastrodermis, cnidocyte, also have a nerve net
How do they catch food? How do they digest it?
…
Is the gastrovascular cavity a secondary body cavity?
No, primary?
Radial vs biradial symmetry
…
