Activities of daily living
Personal care tasks performed daily (bathing, dressing, caring for teeth, hair, toilet, drinking, and moving around)
Perineal Area
The area of the body between the genitals and the anus
Foot Care
Care of the feet. (make sure that area’s of concern are reported to the nurse)
NPO
Nothing by mouth
Oral Care
Care of mouth, teeth and gums, tongue, inside of mouth and dentures if used.
Catheter
A tube that is used to drain the bladder
Condom Catheter
Also referred to as a Texas Catheter that has an attachment on the end that fits over the penis
Elimination
Process of expelling solid waste not absorbed into the cells (peeing and pooping)
Enema
Specific amount of water flowed into the colon to eliminate stool (when they put water through a tube to get all of the poop out)
Fecal Impaction
hard stool in the rectum that cannot be expelled (hard poop that you cant push out)
Fracture pan
bedpan used for a resident who cannot assist with raising hips onto the regular bedpan
Hemiparesis
weakness on one side of the body
Hemiplegia
Paralysis on one side of the body
Incontinence
when you cant control your bladder
Indwelling Catheter
catheter that remains in the bladder for a period of time (catheters that are left inside)
Paraplegia
loss of function of lower body and legs (paralysis under the waist)
Portable Commode (bedside)
Its a hospital portable toilet
Prosthesis
Artificial body part (prosthetic)
Quadriplegia
Loss of the function of legs, trunk and arms (paralysis of all four limbs)
Suppository
medication given through the rectum to cause a bowel movement (medicine given through the rear to make you poop)
Void
Pee/Urination
Alignment
put in a straight line; shoulders directly above hips, head and neck straight, arms and legs in a natural position
Ambulation
walking
Assistive Devices
Equipment used to help residents to increase independence.
Body Mechanics
Using the body properly to coordinate balance and movement (describes the way we move in our daily lives)
Cane
Assistive device used by the resident with weakness on one side
Dangle()
sitting up with feet over the edge of the bed
Deformities()
abnormally formed parts of the body ( when parts of your body is deformed)
Fowlers Position()
Head of the bed elevated 45 to 60 degrees
Lateral Position
Laying on side either left of the right
Pivot
to turn with one foot while remaining stationary
Logrolling
To turn or move the resident without disturbing the alignment of their body
Positioning
The placement and alignment of the resident’s body when assisting the resident to sit, lie down, or turn ( to put or arrange someone in a particular way or place)
Semi-Fowler Position
When the head of the bed is elevated to only 30-45 degree’s
Supine Position
Lying flat on the back
Transfer
Moving the resident from one surface to another
Transfer belt (Gait belt)
A safety belt used to assist the resident who is weak or unsteady during transfers or walking
Walker
assistive device used for support and steadiness
