CN6 - Abducens nerve Flashcards
Definition
A neurological disorder that affects the function of the abducens nerve, which controls the lateral rectus muscle of the eye.
Aetiology/ causes
Head trauma
Tumors
Vascular disorders
Infections, inflammation, or other neurological conditions.
Risk factors
The risk factors for abducens nerve palsy are not well established, but it has been associated with hypertension, diabetes, and other vascular risk factors.
Epidemiology/ Population affected
Abducens nerve palsy is relatively uncommon, with an estimated incidence of 0.9-2.3 cases per 100,000 persons per year.
It affects both sexes equally and is more commonly seen in adults, with a peak incidence in the fifth and sixth decades of life.
Clinical presentation
The most common symptom of abducens nerve palsy is horizontal diplopia (double vision), which is worse when looking towards the affected side.
Other symptoms may include difficulty moving the affected eye in certain directions or an eye that appears to be turned inward
Prognosis
The prognosis for abducens nerve palsy depends on the underlying cause and the extent of nerve damage. In some cases, the condition may resolve on its own without any treatment, while in other cases, treatment may be necessary to manage the symptoms.
