What is the definition of a combat system?
The set of person and machine resources which comprise the fighting capabilities of the vessel subsystems include weapons, sensors, intelligence information, sources and the cms.

A military management system comprising of a close integration between person and machine.

Tactical data fusion: formulation of a picture by fusing together all the information from a wide range of sources.
Situation assessment: an intelligent assessment of the environment of a ship.

Resource planning: appointment of resources in anticipation of a future situation.
What are the defined Time scales CMS operates over?
Long term: days to months, Major sea areas.
Medium term: hours to days, thousands of miles.
Current: seconds to minutes. Hundreds of miles.
Immediate: fractions of seconds to minutes, limited area
What is the definition of a command system?
A logical grouping of personnel and machines responsible for immediate and current activities of the CMS
What is the definition of a command support system?
The logical grouping of personnel machines responsible for the medium and long-term activities of the CMS
Give a technical description of each NATO system architecture
A centralized system uses a central processor to carry out all the data processing.
Federated system has a subsystems which are autonomous in data handling to a certain degree but are still controlled by central computer.
A distributed system. All the data handling is distributed amongst the processors without the need for a central computer
What do you understand by the term functional grouping
When weapons and senses that work together are grouped together via a high-speed data link. This means it doesn’t have to go through the CMS
