CMM: Chemical Analysis Flashcards
Explain evidence for the need
to monitor levels of one of the above ions in substances used in society
Lead is a toxic heavy metal which can damage all organs of the body, especially the brain, kidneys and reproductive system by disrupting enzyme systems
Neurological damage as lead is rapidly absorbed by the brain
Inhibits the formation of haemoglobin in red blood cells causing anameia and reducting the ability of blood to transport oxygen
BIOACCUMALATES in the body and is difficult to eliminate. Also bioconcentrates and persists in the environment for long periods of time
Describe the use of atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) in detecting concentrations of metal ions in solutions
AAS is a quantitative form of analysis that uses the absorption of light to measure the concentration of metal ions in solution.
