CMAS - L03 Reporting Child Malreatment Flashcards
Disclosure is a _____, not an event
Process
Accidental disclosure
Behavioral acting out: Observing a child acting out sexual acts or violent behaviors may indicate the child has experienced maltreatment, witnessed violence, or was exposed to inappropriate content for the child’s age and developmental stage, are then reenacting the behaviors they have experienced or been exposed to.
**Reports from other children: **A child may make a disclosure to a peer, without realizing the act they have disclosed was something of concern and the peer reports the disclosure to their parent.
Medical Symptoms: While not always the case, a child may present with medical symptoms of child maltreatment which may trigger a reporting. With that being said, even when medical evidence exists, potentially indicating maltreatment has occurred, children may still be reluctant to disclose what caused the injury.
Observation by a third person: An incident was observed by someone not involved.
The first person a child reports abuse to is one of the most important people in the process of children obtaining resources, support, and potentially an end to experiencing future maltreatment.
As the first person to hear the maltreatment, you are letting the child know that they are believable, they are being heard, and they matter.
“take it all back”—also known as recantation—
—is common among children who disclose sexual abuse. Most children who recant are telling the truth when they originally disclose, but may later have mixed feelings about their abuser and about what has happened as a result of
the disclosure.
The BASER Model, detailed by Henderson (1992), provides a helpful format to ensure you are a supportive person to a child who is in the ______

when the reporter, in his or her official

Mandatory reporters are required to report

neglected.
They do not have the burden of
providing proof that abuse or neglect has
occurred.
Permissive reporters follow the
same standards when electing to make a
report.
“Privileged communications”
is the statutory recognition of the right
to maintain confidential communications
