Where does the pituitary gland sit?

A

rests w/i sella turcica

entirely surrounded by dura except small apperture through diaphragma sella to receive input from hypothalamus

What are the anatomic boundaries of the pituitary gland?

A

ant and inf - sphenoid sinus
post - bony dorsum sella
laterally - cavernous sinuses (contain internal carotid, III, IV, VI, v1, v2)
sup - diaphragma sella, above that is optic chiasm w/i suprasellar cistern
optic chiasm forms part of floor of 3rd ventricle

When is emergent surgical intervention indicated w pituitary apoplexy?

A

large tumor involves optic N. or chiasm and inf 3rd ventricle –> obtundation and blindness
