What are the cluster C PDs?
Avoidant,
Obsessive-compulsive, Dependent
What are clinical features of Avoidant PDs?
Extreme sensitivity to the opinions and possible criticism from others
Shy away from work or social relationships because of fears of rejection due to core sense of inadequacy
Unusually reluctant to take personal risks due to possible embarrassment
Tend to have few relationships
What are causes of Avoidant PDs?
Early rejection – low self-esteem
In familial studies related to chronic anxiety
Overlaps with Axis I Social Phobia
What are clinical features of dependent?
Subordinates own needs for those of others
Reliance on others to make major and minor life decisions
Unreasonable fear of abandonment
Clingy and submissive in interpersonal relationships (abusive relationships)
Associated features: self-doubt, excessive humility
poor independent functioning, mood d/o’s,
anxiety.
What are causes of Dependent PD?
unclear
early disruptions in learning independence (dependent behaviors were directly or indirectly rewarded/independent behaviors were discouraged).
What are treatment options of dependent PD?
Often experience fatigue, malaise, and vague anxiety (SSRI, tricyclics, anxiolytics)
foster independence

What are clinical features of OCD PD?
fixated on doing things right, strive for a sense of control
highly perfectionists
orderly and emotionally shallow
irritated by others who do not value order
Usually do not identify feeling distressed (egosyntonic).
What is the cause of OCPD?
unknown
maybe genetics
Psychoanalytic view: Stagnation in “anal” stages of development of personality.
“Controlling parents” is an ongoing theory.
What are comorbidities of OCPD?
Major depressive disorder, dysthymia, and
generalized anxiety
What are treatments for OCPD?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT
Addresses fears related to the need for orderliness
Rumination, procrastination, and feelings of inadequacy
