CLP Flashcards
what is the most important reason for doing a vehicle inspection?
safety, for yourself and other road users
what things should you check during a trip?
instruments, air pressure gauge, temperature gauges, pressure gauges, ammeter/voltmeter, mirrors, tires, cargo and covers, lights; if see, hear, smell, feel anything that might mean trouble
name some key steering system parts
steering column, steering gear box, tie rods; hoses, pumps, and fluids on power steering
name some suspension system defects
spring hangers that allow movement of axle from proper position; cracked or broken spring hangers; missing or broken leaves in any leaf spring; broken leaves in a multi-leaf spring or leaves that have shifted so they might hit a tire or other part; leaking shock absorbers; torque rod or arm, u-bolts, spring hangers, or other axle positioning parts that are cracked, damaged or missing; air suspension systems that are damaged and/or missing; any loose, cracked, broken, or missing frame members
what three kinds of emergency equipment must you have
fire extinguisher, spare electrical fuses, warning devices for parked vehicles (3 reflective triangles or at lease 6 fusees or 3 liquid burning flares)
what is the minimum tread depth for front tires
4/32-inch in every major groove
what is the minimum tread depth for tires other than front
2/32-inch in every major groove
name some things you should check on the front of your vehicle during the walk around inspection
low beams are on and both of the four-way flashers are working, high beams working, turn signals, front axle, steering system, wiper blades, windshield,
what should wheel bearing seals be checked for
not leaking
how many red reflective triangles should you carry
three
how do you test hydraulic brakes for leaks
pump the brake pedal 3 times, apply firm pressure to the pedal and hold for 5 seconds; pedal should not move
why put the starter switch key in your pocket during the vehicle inspection
someone may start and move the vehicle
why should you back toward the driver’s side
easier to see, can watch the rear of vehicle
if stopped on a hill, how can you start moving without rolling back
partly engage clutch before taking foot off brake; put on parking brake whenever necessary; tractor-trailer with brake hand valve, the hand valve can be applied
when backing, why is it important to use a helper
I have blind spots
what’s the most important hand signal that you and the helper should agree on
stop
what are the two special conditions where you should downshift
before starting down a hill or entering a curve
when should you downshift automatic transmissions
before going down grades
retarders keep you from skidding when the road is slippery, true or false
false, with poor traction they can cause skidding; turn off when wet, icy or snow covered
what are the two ways to know when to shift
engine speed and road speed
how far ahead does the manual say you should look
12-15 seconds
what are two main things to look ahead for
vehicles and traffic lights
what’s your most important way to see the sides and rear of your vehicle
mirrors
what does “communicating” mean in safe driving
signaling intentions and communicating presence
where should you place reflectors when stopped on a divided highway
10, 100, and 200 feet behind vehicle
what three things add up to total stopping distance
perception distance + reaction distance + braking distance
if you go twice as fast, will your stopping distance increase by two or four times
four
empty trucks have the best braking, true or false
false
what is hydroplaning
tires leaving the surface of the road
what is “black ice”
thin layer of ice clear enough to see the road underneath
how do you find out how many seconds of following distance space you have
wait for the vehicle in front to pass a landmark or shadow, and count as one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand
if you are driving a 30-foot vehicle at 55 mph, how many seconds of following distance should you allow
Four seconds.
You need at least one second for each 10 feet of vehicle length at speeds below 40 mph. At greater speeds, you must add 1 second for safety.
you should decrease your following distance if somebody is following you too closely, true or false
False, you should increase following distance
if you swing wide to the left before turning right, another driver may try to pass you on the right, true or false
true
what is a hazard
something on the road, other vehicles, obstacles
why make emergency plans when you see a hazard
to avoid an accident / stay safe
what are some tips to follow so you won’t become a distracted driver
turn off all communication devices; if must use a mobile phone, make sure it is within close proximity, that it is operable while you are restrained; do not type or read a text message; familiarize yourself with vehicles features; adjust all vehicle controls and mirrors before driving; pre-program radio stations; clear vehicle of any unnecessary objects and secure cargo; review maps, program GPS and plan route before driving; don’t attempt to read or write while driving; avoid smoking, eating, and drinking while driving; don’t engage in complex conversations; secure commitment from passengers to behave responsibly
how do you use in-vehicle communications equipment cautiously
hands-free, speaker phone or in ear device, no reading or writing texts, use voice activated dialing
how do you recognize a distracted driver
vehicles that may drift over the lane divider lines or within their own lane; vehicles traveling at inconsistent speeds; drivers who are preoccupied with maps, food, cigarettes, cell phones, or other objects; drivers who appear to be involved in conversations with passengers
what is the difference between aggressive driving and road rage
aggressive driving is selfish, bold, or pushy manners, without regard for for the rights or safety of others (i.e. changing lanes frequently and abruptly without notice; road rage is operating a motor vehicle with the intent of doing harm to others or physically assaulting a driver or their vehicle
what should you do when confronted with an aggressive driver
make every attempt to get out of their way; put your pride in the back seat; avoid eye contact; ignore gestures and refuse to react to them; report aggressive drivers to the appropriate authorities by providing a vehicle description, license number, location and, if possible, direction of travel; call the police when safe
what are some things you can do to reduce your stress before and while you drive
listen to “easy listening” music; give the drive your full attention; be realistic about your travel time, expect delays; if you’re going to be later than you expected - deal with it, take a deep breath and accept the delay; give other drivers the benefit of the doubt; slow down and keep your following distance reasonable; don’t drive slowly in the left lane of traffic; avoid gestures; be a cautious and courteous driver
you should use low beams whenever you can, true or false
false, you should use high beams whenever you can (500 ft)
what should you do before you drive if you are drowsy
go to sleep for the night or take a 15-20 minute nap
what effects can wet brakes cause, how can you avoid these problems
water in the brakes can cause the brakes to be weak, to apply unevenly, or to grab. Causes lack of braking power, wheel lockups, pulling to one side or the other, and jackknife
you should let air out of hot tires so the pressure goes back to normal, true or false
false, when they cool down the pressure may be too low
you can safely remove the radiator cap as long as the engine isn’t overheated, true or false
false
Wait until engine has cooled. Protect hands (use gloves or a thick cloth). Turn radiator cap slowly to the first stop, which releases the pressure seal. Step back while pressure is released from cooling system. When all pressure has been released, press down on the cap and turn it further to remove it.
what factors determine your selection of a “safe” speed when going down a long, steep downgrade
total weight of the vehicle and cargo, length of the grade, steepness of the grade, road conditions, and weather
why should you be in the proper gear before starting down a hill
speed will increase on downgrades because of gravity
describe the proper braking technique when going down a long, steep downgrade
press and release
Apply the brakes just hard enough to feel a definite slowdown. When your speed has been reduced to approximately five mph below your “safe” speed, release the brakes. (This brake application should last for about three seconds.) When your speed has increased to your “safe” speed, repeat steps 1 and 2.
what type of vehicles can get stuck on a railroad-highway crossing
Low slung units (lowboy, car carrier, moving van, possum-belly livestock trailer). Single-axle tractor pulling a long trailer with its landing gear set to accommodate a tandem-axle tractor.
how long does it take for a typical tractor-trailer unit to clear a double track
14 seconds to clear a single track and more than 15 seconds to clear a double track
stopping is not always the safest thing to do in an emergency, true or false
true
what are some advantages of going right instead of left around an obstacle
no one is likely to be driving on the shoulder but may be passing on the left; moving right won’t force anyone into oncoming traffic lane
what is an “escape ramp”
Escape ramps are made to stop runaway vehicles safely without injuring drivers and passengers. Escape ramps use a long bed of loose, soft material to slow a runaway vehicle, sometimes in combination with an upgrade.
if a tire blows out, you should put the brakes on hard to stop quickly, true or false
false, ease up on gas until vehicle slows enough to apply the brakes
how do you know if your vehicle has antilock brakes
check if your vehicle was manufactured after 3/1/1998; look for wheel speed sensor wires that are coming from the rear of your brakes; check for a yellow ABS malfunction lamp on the instrument panel
what is the proper braking technique when driving a vehicle with antilock brakes
brake until the tire starts to lock, ease up, then brake once moving again (stabbing)
how do antilock brakes help you
they keep the tires from locking up and not moving
what are some things to do at a crash scene to prevent another crash
If your vehicle is involved in the crash, try to get it to the side of the road. This will help prevent another crash and allow traffic to move.
If you’re stopping to help, park away from the crash. The area immediately around the crash will be needed for emergency vehicles.
Put on your flashers. Set out reflective triangles to warn other traffic. Make sure other drivers can see them in time to avoid the crash.
name two causes of fires
After Crashes. Spilled fuel, improper use of flares.
Tires. Under-inflated tires and duals that touch.
Electrical System. Short circuits due to damaged insulation, loose connections.
Fuel. Driver smoking, improper fueling, loose fuel connections.
Cargo. Flammable cargo, improperly sealed or loaded cargo, poor ventilation.
what kinds of fires is a B:C extinguisher not good for
wood fire
The B:C type fire extinguisher is designed to work on electrical fires and burning liquids.
when using your extinguisher, should you get as close as possible to the fire
No, maintain a safe distance
stand upwind if possible

false, only time will
what is a hazardous materials placard
sign to indicate what is being transported to know precautions to take
why are placards used
to know precautions and treatment to take
most serious vehicle skids result from
driving too fast for road conditions
you’re driving a new truck with a manual transmission. What gear will you probably have to use to take a long, steep downhill grade?
A lower gear than you would use to climb the hill
there are 2 things a driver can do to prevent a rollover. They are 1-go slow around turns; and 2-
keep the cargo as close to the ground as possible
which of these can cause a fire?
1-under inflated tires; 2-loose fuel connections
if you’re driving a slow-moving vehicle on a 2-lane highway, you must pull off at the first safe turnout if the number of vehicles behind you is
5 or more
rust around a lug nut indicates
a loose lug nut
when checking the adjustment on air brakes, slack adjusters should have no more than
1 inch of travel
you’re coupling a semi-trailer to your tractor but haven’t yet backed under. The trailer is at the right height when
it will be raised slightly when the tractor is backed under it
the braking power of the spring brakes
depends on the service brakes being in adjustment
